In her wildly successful bestseller, The Artist's Way, Julia Cameron offers a deep and healing look at a process for getting in touch with one's own latent creative talents. Her work sparked a movement, and the spontaneous formation of "Artist Way Groups" to help readers support each other through the transformation that reading, and doing the exercises in this book can bring about. Sharing that journey with others makes it more manageable and fun. And do-able.
Cameron introduces us to set of transforming Basic Principles such as, "Creativity is the natural order of life. Life is energy: pure creative energy." Or, "It is safe to open ourselves up to greater and greater creativity." She helps us see some home truths about ourselves such as the sneaky addiction some of us have to anxiety or drama -- which prevents us from doing the methodical parts of grounding our creative inspirations via actual active creative output. And she lists out negative limiting beliefs that subconsciously stymie our follow through on creative projects.
She presents the various ideas and points of "recovery" in chapters designed to be approached weekly. She breaks open new worlds of possibility with the now famous, "morning pages' exercise. In my own first exposure to the book over a decade ago I became stuck at week three, and spent the better part of four years digesting the various other parts of the book I had read.
If you are a creative person who is not happy about losing precious time to procrastination, or seeing to the energy needs of others to the detriment of your creative output this book could be for you. If you are looking to open up your flows of energy and fuelling your creative life, give yourself the gift of this book. Here's me celebrating your creativity and talent and wishing you very well.
